Sweet, simple, and perfectly spiced, ready to brighten any snack or meal.
INGREDIENTS
- 3–4 lbs of apples (any variety)
- ⅓ cup water (adjust as needed)
- 2–4 tbsp granulated cane sugar or maple syrup
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp lemon juice (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Peel, core, and roughly chop the apples.
- In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, combine apples and water.
- Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the apples start to soften (about 4 minutes).
- Cover and continue simmering for 10–20 minutes, until the apples are very tender and beginning to fall apart.
- Remove from heat and mash the apples to your desired consistency using a fork, potato masher, or immersion blender.
- Stir in sugar or maple syrup and lemon juice, adjusting to taste.
- Serve warm or chilled; garnish with nutmeg, if desired.
- Store leftover applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 6 months. Can be jarred for extended storage.
TIPS & VARIATIONS
- Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for a balanced flavour.
- Adjust the amount of sugar or sweetener as desired.
- For extra depth of flavour, add ¼ tsp ground nutmeg or allspice.
- For a richer taste, stir in 1–2 tbsp butter after mashing.
- Try adding 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar for a tangy twist.
So simple and so good! I used it in a banana bread recipe, and it added just the right amount of moisture and sweetness.
