Phytonutrients

Phyto comes from the Greek word for plant (phytón). Phytonutrients means plant-nutrients, which are naturally found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

Phytonutrients are responsible for the vibrant colour, smell, and flavour of plant foods, with each colour group offering its own unique set of nutrients and health benefits.

When you hear the recommendation, “eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day,” it is sound advice. Encouraging children to explore a variety of foods of different colours is a great way to introduce them to nutritious foods and inspire a lifelong love for healthy eating.
